Over dit exemplaar
Bladvormig bariet opent zich over dit Marokkaanse stuk in overlappende waaiers en rozetten, wit langs de buitenranden en naar het midden toe honing- en roestkleurig getint. Daaroverheen ligt een sprenkeling vanadiniet: honderden kleine zeshoekige kristallen in robijnrood tot bloedbruin, elk met een harde, bijna metalige schittering in het licht. Zwarte spikkels mangaanoxide onderbreken de bleke blaadjes.
Vanadiniet, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, hoort thuis in de geoxideerde bovenniveaus van looderts, waar vanadium dat uit het omringende gesteente is uitgeloogd, lood in oplossing tegenkomt; het kristalliseert in het hexagonale stelsel en dankt zijn gewicht en diamantglans aan dat lood. Beide mineralen hier zijn zacht, rond Mohs 3, en de barietblaadjes zijn broos aan de punten, dus dit stuk hoort op de plank en niet in een zak.
Het meet 6,4 × 5,3 × 3,6 cm en weegt 105 g, merkbaar dicht in de hand voor zijn formaat. Het specimen op de foto's is het specimen dat u ontvangt.
