Over dit exemplaar
Amber waar de bovenribben het licht vangen, olijfbruin over de onderste helft: één scheelietoctaëder staat met de punt omlaag tegen een kleine waaier kleurloos kwarts. De glans is vettig in plaats van glasachtig, en de vlakken dragen een geëtste, putjesrijke textuur die de lichtvlek verstrooit in plaats van hem heel terug te geven. Het kwarts erachter is wit en ingetogen, achtergrond en geen concurrent.
Scheeliet is calciumwolframaat, CaWO4, dat tetragonaal kristalliseert: de vorm die als octaëder oogt is in werkelijkheid een dubbele piramide, en juist die bijna-symmetrie bevredigt in de hand. Xuebaoding, boven Pingwu in Sichuan, is de klassieke Chinese vindplaats voor de soort, en de kristallen daar lopen door dit bereik van amber naar bruin. Reken erop dat het zwaarder aanvoelt dan het formaat doet vermoeden; dat doet wolfraam nu eenmaal. Mohs 4,5 tot 5, dus het krast makkelijk, en onder kortgolvig ultraviolet licht gloeit het doorgaans blauwwit.
Het meet 4,6 × 3,0 × 3,6 cm en weegt 65 g op zijn heldere acrylkubus. De afgebeelde octaëder is het exemplaar dat onder deze aanbieding is gereserveerd.
