Over dit exemplaar
Messinggouden pyriet verdringt zich over het vlak van deze kleine Spaanse plaat, kristal na kristal schouder aan schouder tot er nauwelijks een opening overblijft. Fijne parallelle strepen lopen over elk vlak en vangen het licht in smalle banen. Waar het goud dunner wordt, zitten waterheldere kwartskristallen klem in de tussenruimten, klein en gedrongen in plaats van zuilvormig, en langs één rand is een randje okerkleurig gesteente bewaard gebleven.
De strepen zijn een loep waard. Pyriet, FeS2, wisselt tijdens de groei tussen kubus- en pyritoëdervlakken, en beide habitussen grijpen in fijne trapjes in elkaar die elke omschakeling vastleggen. Met 6 tot 6,5 op de schaal van Mohs is het mineraal hard maar bros, en de metaalglans wordt dof onder vochtige vingers: een droge vitrine en droge handen houden het goud decennialang helder.
De plaat meet 6,1 × 2,9 × 3,6 cm en weegt 105 g, een prettig handpalmformaat dat hier tussen duim en wijsvinger wordt getoond; een sokkel wordt niet meegeleverd. Wat u op de foto's ziet, is het stuk dat wij inpakken en versturen.
