宝蓝色的蓝铜矿以紧密而闪亮的晶簇覆满这件铜矿标本的正面，薄荷绿至祖母绿的孔雀石则以柔软的纤维状垫团自其间顶出。 两者变薄之处，锈橙色的铁帽透出底色，后缘则保留着一层粗糙的风化皮壳。
蓝铜矿 Cu3(CO32(OH)2 与孔雀石 Cu2(CO3)(OH)2 是铜碳酸盐家族中的近亲。 孔雀石是两者中较稳定的一方，留在潮湿地层里的蓝铜矿会缓慢转变为它；像这样蓝与绿在每一尺度上交错的表面，正是这场转变被捕捉在中途的样子。 两种矿物都偏软，莫氏硬度约 3.5 至 4，也都以避开直射阳光最能保色。
