About this specimen

Morocco, azurite with malachite, hydrozincite, quartz and limonite at 2.1 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Azurite in an electric blue and malachite in bright green grow together along a ridge of dark matrix, with pale hydrozincite and quartz filling the hollows and orange limonite beneath.

Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Malachite is a copper carbonate whose banded, botryoidal growth produces the concentric greens collectors know; the Congo material is the best known to collectors. Hydrozincite is a zinc carbonate that forms white crusts and is best known for its strong blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.

Moroccan vanadinite from the Mibladen district is the world standard for the species, prized for red colour and sharp hexagonal form.

By size it is thumbnail, 2.1 × 1.8 × 1.3 cm (0.83 × 0.71 × 0.51 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
