About this specimen
One azurite sun covers nearly the whole face of this thin slab: a disc of ultramarine so dark at the centre it reads as ink, lightening to cornflower wherever the light catches it. The surface is velvet, not glass — countless microscopic blades standing on end, like the pile of a rug. Two or three pale islands of host clay break through the blue and give the disc a coastline.
Suns like this form where azurite crystallises between the layers of a soft claystone: with no room to build upward, the radiating blades spread sideways into a flat plate. Azurite is a copper carbonate, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, at Mohs 3.5 to 4, and the pale host is softer still. Never wash a Malbunka sun and never brush the blue; a puff of air is the whole cleaning routine, and it should be kept out of direct sunlight.
The slab runs 2.8 × 2.8 cm and 1.3 cm thick, weighing just 10 g, and it is held to the clear acrylic block with a pad of white mounting putty. Each image shows this actual sun, mounted as pictured.
