About this specimen

Hubei azurite with malachite at 4.4 cm and 65 g; a miniature. A rounded nodule coated in sparkling deep blue azurite crystals with green malachite along the base, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Malachite forms wherever copper ores weather, but few localities match the depth of green and the velvet surfaces of central African material.

Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.

By size it is miniature, 4.4 × 3.8 × 4.3 cm (1.73 × 1.50 × 1.69 in) and 65 g (2.3 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
