About this specimen

Hubei azurite with malachite at 6.7 cm and 55 g; a small cabinet piece. A plate coated in sparkling deep blue azurite with green malachite spreading across the lower half, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Velvety, fibrous or botryoidal, malachite reads as pure copper green; the best pieces show silky radiating fibres under magnification.

Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 4.9 × 2.5 × 6.7 cm (1.93 × 0.98 × 2.64 in) and 55 g (1.9 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
