About this specimen

Morocco, azurite with malachite, hydrozincite and quartz at 3.3 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Azurite in deep blue and malachite in bright green grow side by side up a narrow matrix ridge, the malachite in fine radiating sprays and the azurite in blocky crystals.

Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Malachite is a copper carbonate whose banded, botryoidal growth produces the concentric greens collectors know; the Congo material is the best known to collectors. Hydrozincite is a zinc carbonate that forms white crusts and is best known for its strong blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.

Morocco's Mibladen and Touissit districts are the classic source of vanadinite, cerussite and baryte, mined from lead deposits in the High Atlas.

By size it is miniature, 3.3 × 2.2 × 2 cm (1.30 × 0.87 × 0.79 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.
