About this specimen

Hubei azurite with malachite at 4.3 cm and 44 g; a miniature. A block coated in sparkling deep blue azurite crystals with green malachite along the edges, the two minerals the supplier lists.

Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.

Malachite is a copper carbonate whose banded, botryoidal growth produces the concentric greens collectors know; the Congo material is the best known to collectors.

Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.

By size it is miniature, 3.4 × 3.2 × 4.3 cm (1.34 × 1.26 × 1.69 in) and 44 g (1.6 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
