About this specimen
Two copper carbonates, two temperaments, on one upright block: velvety green malachite in rounded botryoidal cushions, and an ultramarine azurite crust banking up the right-hand side in tight sugary rosettes so saturated they look lit from behind. The green climbs into a small spire at the top; the blue follows it like a tidemark and pools again along the lower ledge, where a few darker grey-brown patches of host still show.
Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, and malachite, Cu2CO3(OH)2, differ by little more than a carbonate group and a water molecule, and azurite slowly gives way to malachite in humid air. Specimens like this are caught mid-conversion, which is where the two-colour effect comes from. Both are soft, around Mohs 3.5 to 4, and both dislike acids and wet cleaning — dry dusting only.
The block stands 7.7 × 4.4 × 5.2 cm and weighs 147 g, self-supporting on its flat lower face with no base required. The photographs were taken of this specimen alone.
