About this specimen
Deep royal-blue azurite runs across this specimen in sugar-fine crusts that throw glints back from every angle and darken almost to black in the shadowed folds. Green fibrous tufts — malachite, possibly chrysocolla — grow along the ridges and inside one open pocket on the right, where a seam of ochre-tan iron oxide cuts through the blue.
Azurite and malachite are both basic copper carbonates, and the green is frequently the blue’s successor: azurite takes up water over geological time and converts to malachite, so a piece like this catches the reaction partway through. Both are soft, Mohs 3.5–4, and azurite is happiest out of prolonged direct sun. The locality has not been confirmed and the green species has not been tested, so both are listed as open questions rather than guessed at.
