Fluorite Buying Guide
Fluorite is the heart of our catalog and the mineral we know best. Nearly all of our fluorite is sourced directly from the classic Chinese localities: Yaogangxian (glassy cubes and penetration twins, often on quartz needles or with muscovite), Xianghualing (sea-green to blue-green octahedral and stepped-cubic crystals), and Shangbao (color-zoned cubes with distinctive dodecahedral modifications). Buying close to the mine means we can select for condition and color in person rather than from a wholesaler's mixed flat.
How fluorite is graded
Look at four things. Transparency: top pieces are glassy and gemmy right through; matte or silky surfaces grade lower. Color and zoning: saturated greens, blues, and purples command premiums, and crisp phantom zoning — color banding that traces earlier crystal growth — is a feature, not a flaw. Form: sharp cubes, octahedra, and especially interpenetration twins are more desirable than rounded or crude crystals. Condition: fluorite cleaves easily, so undamaged corners and edges matter more here than in almost any other species.

Starter pieces — small cubes on matrix, minor edge wear — run $12 to $50. The core of the collection sits between $50 and $250, where you find gemmy, well-twinned, damage-free miniatures and small cabinet pieces; our fluorite median is around $100. Showcase pieces above $250 offer large undamaged faces, intense color, or exceptional twins, with the finest pieces reaching four figures.
Care notes
Fluorite is soft (Mohs 4) and cleaves in four directions: store pieces so they cannot knock together, and keep saturated colors out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can slowly pale some material. Many of our Yaogangxian pieces also fluoresce blue-violet under UV — a bonus worth checking in the listing photos.
