About this specimen
Yunnan, azurite with quartz at 5.3 cm; a small cabinet piece. Azurite spreads across the face of the slab as a deep blue crust, with a patch of blue-green where it grades into its alteration products and a band of quartz running through the rock underneath.
Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
