About this specimen
A pocket of azurite crystals glitters at the centre of this specimen in a blue so saturated it swings between electric and navy as the light moves; thousands of minute terminations line the cavity and the sparkle comes from all of them at once. Grass-green malachite forms crusts and small botryoidal knots around the rim, and the host rock is a dark, iron-stained brown that pushes the blue forward.
The two minerals are chemically one step apart. Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, is the less stable of the pair and slowly takes on water to become malachite, which is why green so often edges blue in a single piece. Keep it out of long direct sun and away from dry heat to slow that change, and never wash it — a soft dry brush is all the cleaning a druse like this can take.
