About this specimen

Morocco, azurite with malachite, hydrozincite, quartz and limonite at 2.7 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Bright blue azurite crystals and green malachite grow along a dark ridge that sits on a white quartz base, with pale hydrozincite and orange limonite filling the hollows between them.

The saturated blue of azurite stands out among the common minerals, and Chinese and Congolese material now sits alongside the classic Moroccan finds.

Velvety, fibrous or botryoidal, malachite reads as pure copper green; the best pieces show silky radiating fibres under magnification. Hydrozincite is a zinc carbonate that forms white crusts and is best known for its strong blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.

Morocco's Mibladen and Touissit districts are the classic source of vanadinite, cerussite and baryte, mined from lead deposits in the High Atlas.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.7 × 2.6 × 1.1 cm (1.06 × 1.02 × 0.43 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Copper mineral: avoid dust, wash hands after handling.
