融合的瘤状体彼此攀叠，宛如一柱琥珀色花椰菜，表面每一平方毫米都布满细小的尖状晶端，迎光时闪出砂糖般的细碎光泽。 颜色由脊部的暖蜜色过渡到凹处更深的焦糖色，最薄的晶尖悬出之处则呈半透明的稻草色边缘。
云南正产出这种形态的碳酸盐结壳——由缓慢渗流的地下水沉积而成、顶端呈玫瑰状的浑圆集合体。 霰石与方解石共用同一化学式 CaCO3，差别仅在原子的堆叠方式，因此这样的标本无法用肉眼分辨；在做过正式检测之前，我们诚实地标示为霰石／方解石。 无论属于何者，它都偏软，莫氏硬度约 3 至 4，怕酸，也怕碰撞。
