枪铁色而油亮，方正得像机械零件：这件中国小标本上的车轮矿晶体是块状而非板状的。 最大的一枚以一个宽阔的平坦晶面为标本封顶，其棱边裂成细密的平行阶梯——正是这个矿种闻名的车轮状刻痕。 在其下方与右侧，更明亮的晶体从一块散布着黄铜色硫化物斑点的白色母岩上丛生而出。
车轮矿是 PbCuSbS3，一种铅铜锑硫化物，而它在同一晶面上一再双晶的习性，正是那些车轮状轮廓的成因；棱边上的每一道刻痕，都是这一叠之中的一片双晶薄层。 莫氏硬度 2.5 至 3，此矿偏软且容易碰伤，频繁把玩会在光泽上留下一层晦暗的薄膜，所以请托着母岩拿取。
