圆润的瘤状草黄色方解石团块覆盖了这片标本的大部分，在高处缘缘相接密实铺开，并在中央让出一道宽阔的沟道，露出裸露的奶色母岩，岩面上可见细致的灯芯绒般纹理。 每一团都散开为多面的晶尖，随标本转动而各自闪亮，黄色在晶体堆积最厚处加深为金色。
大冶位于矽卡岩地带，花岗岩侵入石灰岩，留下的碳酸盐晶洞长出的方解石正是这种温暖的色调。 覆盖率是这样一片标本能否成立的关键：晶体布满大部分陈列面，转向光线时没有一处死角。 代价则是脆弱——每一颗晶头都突出在外，方解石软到一枚铜币就能留痕，而与更硬的标本共处一个抽屉，会把这些晶尖磨平。
