一颗乳白色方解石昂首立在低矮的黄褐色母岩结壳上，整件标本小到握起拳头就能藏住。 晶体呈半透明而非全透，晶面带细密条纹，在光下微微泛出蜡质感，主晶尖后方还升起第二颗较小的晶尖。 母岩露出之处，是一层粒状的橄榄褐色结壳，上面点缀着无色的微晶。
方解石的化学式为 CaCO3，这样一件标本正好示范了收藏者最常遇到的两项特性：硬度仅 3，用铜币就能刻出痕迹；以及三个方向的完全菱面体解理。 这个矿种还具有强烈的双折射，所以把一片清透的碎晶放在印刷线条上，线条会变成两条。 请保持干燥，并远离食醋或任何家用酸液——数秒之内就会蚀损表面。
标本尺寸 3.8 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm，重 25 g。 随件附上照片中的透明压克力条座，以可移除黏土固定——座台、母岩与晶体都与图片一致。
