About this specimen
Fujian thousand-layer red-fluorescing calcite floater at 51 g; a small cabinet piece for the UV collector.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Fujian's fluorite-quartz veins have supplied collectors for two decades; the province is the source of most of the green and purple Chinese fluorite on the market.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6.6 × 4.2 × 2.6 cm (2.60 × 1.65 × 1.02 in) and 51 g (1.8 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
