About this specimen

Most of the calcite crystals on this plate carry a brassy pyrite cap across their upper faces and stay clear glass below, so the surface reads as a mosaic of khaki-gold shields set into colourless stone. The crystals are blocky and flat-topped, meeting in threes at shallow angles — the Mercedes habit, named by collectors for that three-way termination. Loose golden pyrite grit fills the gaps and a rust-red iron seam runs along the lower edge.

Daye, in Hubei, is old iron and copper skarn country, and this pairing is its signature: calcite crystallising first, pyrite settling onto the exposed upper faces once the fluids changed. Calcite is CaCO3, Mohs 3, with perfect rhombohedral cleavage. Keep it away from vinegar, acidic cleaners and anything harder than a fingernail; the pyrite skin also dislikes damp storage.

At 6.6 × 5.8 × 2.5 cm and 111 g this is a flat, shelf-friendly plate that displays face-on, and it arrives without a stand. The specimen in these frames is the one that ships.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
