Daye, Hubei

About Daye, Hubeiextended article
Daye — the Tonglushan skarn's collector calcite
The Daye mining district around Huangshi, Hubei Province, sits on one of China's oldest mined ore fields — the Tonglushan copper-iron skarn, worked since the Bronze Age. For collectors, modern Daye is best known for its remarkably varied calcite.
What Daye is known for
- Yellow prismatic calcite clusters
- Grey prismatic "tower" calcite
- Deep-red octahedral calcite — an unusual habit for the species
- Fluorescent pink needle calcite
- Occasional vanadinite on dark matrix and pyrite druzy
Typical specimen style
Daye calcite favors bold single habits — prismatic towers, sharp octahedra, or needle sprays — over complex combinations. Color saturation and crystal sharpness carry the value; ultraviolet response adds a second display dimension on the fluorescent material.
Collector value
Daye sits a step below the marquee Hunan mines in name recognition, which keeps prices accessible while the material itself competes on form. Red octahedral and strongly fluorescent pieces are the ones collectors move on first.
