淡色、近乎无色的方解石挤满这块大冶板状标本的正面，玻璃质而半透明，数颗晶体带着烟灰色核心，以及生长一度混浊时留下的一抹锈染。 它们坐落在一层布满锈纹的煤黑硬壳上，而两种表面的交会——湿润欲滴的晶体对上哑光的炭黑——正是这件标本的全部论点。
方解石（CaCO3）莫氏硬度 3，沿三组完全解理方向裂开；摔落的晶体与其说是崩缺，不如说是散成一颗颗菱面体，因此这是一件该托着深色基座提取的标本。 品项记载伴生重晶石；镜头清楚落定的则是方解石，晶面亮到足以把高光掷回镜头。 醋与家用酸类一接触就会蚀刻碳酸盐——两者都请远远避开。
