这件瑶岗仙标本的每一个面都由瓷白色的方解石刃状晶体构成，层层堆叠、扇形展开，每一层都自下一层腾起。 每片晶刃都带有细密的平行条纹，使表面呈现丝绸般、近乎蜡质的光泽而非玻璃光；层次堆得最厚之处，白色还微微转暖成奶油色。 顶端附近一小点黑色包裹体，是唯一的中断。
方解石（CaCO3）是矿物学中的变形者——已记录的晶体习性多达数百种——而瑶岗仙的钨矿脉就产出了其中相当一部分。 这类层状生长来自缓慢而低温的碳酸盐流体，而非急促的流动。 莫氏硬度 3、三个方向完全解理，晶刃极易留痕，因此上架时请让它远离较硬的邻居。
