颜色饱和到这种程度的透视石，在光线找到路径钻进去、绿意骤然点燃之前，看起来几乎是黑的。 两群互不相连的晶体在一块米黄色的砂糖状母岩上落脚。 较大的一群堆成一座低矮的丘，晶体短柱状、晶端锐利；左侧较小的一群则排成一条松散的链，单晶各自立在岩面上，之间散着淡薄荷色的细粒生长。
透视石是含水的铜矽酸盐，CuSiO3·H2O，那份绿色由铜供给——与孔雀石的绿、蓝铜矿的蓝出自同一元素。 它形成于铜矿床氧化带的上部，而刚果的料子长期以来都是评判透视石颜色的标尺。 莫氏硬度 5 听来宽容，但这个矿种具良好的菱面体解理，晶端不必受多大委屈就会崩缺。
