这件骷髅由一整块乳白色萤石雕成，石头本身的地质纹理就写在它的脸上。 一道颗粒状晶壳自眉骨延伸过颧骨，一侧太阳穴染上一抹淡绿，颅骨后方则以平面层层退阶——雕工顺着石性走，而不是与之对抗。 眼窝挖得极深，牙齿刻成整齐的格状。
萤石的化学式为 CaF2，属等轴晶系，硬度仅莫氏 4；但对雕刻者而言，真正的难处在于它四个方向的完全解理：一刀失手，就可能沿着藏在石块内部的解理面崩下一片。 骷髅表面那些平坦的刻面，正是顺着这些潜藏的面而走，这也是为什么这件作品应轻放，而不宜碰撞层架。
