橄榄金色的重晶石板状晶体像鳞片般层层交叠，铺满这件江西矿板的整个正面，每一片的尖端都够玻璃质，足以反射出一道高光。 一道乳白色方解石矿脉横切过金色晶面的中段，质地细如砂糖且不透明，右下方另有一块方解石破面而出。
重晶石（BaSO4）就是旧时矿业用语中的「重晶」：比重超过 4.4，意味着这么大一块矿板落在掌心时，比眼睛预估的更沉。 此处厚实的板状晶体正是它的经典晶习。 方解石（CaCO3）与它同居一板，硬度也相近——重晶石在摩氏硬度 3 至 3.5，方解石为 3——因此请把标本放在不会有更硬物件摩擦到那些板尖的地方。
