About this specimen
Jinkouhe, Leshan, Sichuan, baryte with quartz at 7.5 cm; a small cabinet piece. Blocky white baryte crystals are grown together into a solid mass, with a group of small clear quartz points standing out from one side of it.
Baryte (barite) is barium sulfate: heavy for its size, soft, and prone to tabular or bladed crystals with a bright vitreous lustre.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Sichuan's alpine-type veins and skarns yield aquamarine, prehnite, epidote and scheelite of international quality.
