两片琥珀色的薄晶自同一基部升起，构成一个浅浅的 V 形，像一对正要展开的翅膀。 每片薄晶沿长度方向带有细密的生长阶梯纹，因此边缘看起来像锯齿，表面则以一道道横向的光阶留住光线。 颜色从接合处近乎无色，渐深至尖端的温暖金黄，两片薄晶都通透得能在背光下发亮。
方解石极易形成双晶，而共用一个接触面的成对晶体，正是湖北大冶矿床反复出现的特征。 阶梯状的晶面记录了渐进式的生长，每一道阶梯都是碳酸盐供应的一次短暂停顿。 别忘了它的柔软：莫氏硬度 3、三个方向解理，而像这样的薄片比任何其他方解石形态都更容易崩损。 请给它一个不会有东西掉落砸中的层架。
