无色的石膏针晶自橄榄褐色的岩壳中迸出，形成十来朵小小的星芒——有的像雪花般平贴在岩面上摊开，有的则凌空独立，长成单枚修长的叶片。 每一根针晶都晶莹透明，解理面迎光之处泛着珍珠般的光泽，而它们身后深橄榄色的母岩，又让这些无色晶体看来近乎银白。
石膏是二水硫酸钙，CaSO4·2H2O，莫氏硬度 2，是多数藏家收藏中最软的东西：指甲就能留下划痕，积水也会慢慢把它溶掉。 这样的针簇生长在富含硫酸盐的水缓慢渗过空洞之处，每一朵花簇都始于洞壁上的一颗晶种。 请干燥存放，并远离任何比它更硬的东西。
