通体琥珀棕、满布瘤节，这件小巧的贵州石膏是多个叶瓣合生的堆叠，而不是单一球体——四五个浑圆的头部彼此挤压在一起，最大的一个直径约一厘米。 表面每一毫米都如糖霜般覆着细小的尖状晶体，回返的是柔和的闪烁而非明亮的光泽，铁染则在叶瓣交会的凹缝里更为浓重。
石膏（CaSO4·2H2O）莫氏硬度 2，软到指甲即可留下刻痕，而在这样布满细晶的标本上，晶尖是最先受损的部位。 除了不去触碰，也请保持干燥：石膏微溶于水，清洗这种形态的标本，磨掉的正好就是那份让它值得细看的质感。
