一件贵州小标本上汇集了两种质地。 自母岩升起的是一根凹凸不平的白色石膏柱，表面布满圆润的瘤状突起，「爆米花」这个俗称正由此而来，凹陷处积着黄褐色的铁染。 向左伸出的则完全是另一回事：一枚水般清透的石膏板状晶体，玻璃光泽、侧面平整，几乎水平地贴在褐色的围岩上。
石膏（CaSO4·2H2O）是莫氏硬度 2 的标准参照——指甲即可留下刻痕——而且微溶于水，所以水洗是个坏主意，放在温暖的窗台上更糟：热会驱走结构水，令透明部位变得粉白。 请握住母岩拿取，并避免阳光直射。
