把它放在灯下转一转，表面就像水面上的一层油膜：黄铜矿覆着一层氧化薄膜，从黄铜金经洋红、蓝绿一路走到深沉的古铜色，每倾斜一度都在变。 顶面上，十来颗水清透明的方解石小晶体坐在金属丘之间的凹处，锐利的棱边与那一片流转的色彩形成平直的对比。
这种晕彩是一层不到一微米的氧化薄膜，由铜铁硫化物氧化而成；薄膜底下的黄铜色才是黄铜矿真正的颜色。 正因为薄膜极薄，手上的油脂与摩擦都会让它失色，所以请握着粗糙的底面拿取。 方解石莫氏硬度 3，是两者之中较软的一方，而且容易沿解理裂开。
