淡紫色的立方体在这件小型标本上彼此嵌合，一层细致的灰绿色云母质粉尘落在它们的上方晶面，把所经之处的每一道阶梯与棱边都描了出来。 通过浅色的外层生长望进去，颜色更深的紫色晶心浮现为悬在内部的方形阴影——那是更早、颜色更浓的晶体，萤石后来绕着它继续长大。
那些内部的方形就是幻影。 生长中的一次停顿在晶体上留下一层带色的外皮，随后新生的萤石继续向外堆积，把旧的轮廓原地封存。 由于萤石属等轴晶系，幻影会分毫不差地重复立方体的形状，连角都对得上。 5 g 的分量，使它适合收进小盒子配放大镜欣赏，而不是摆上架子。
