先别看颜色，真正抓住目光的是质感：一层后期生成的深紫罗兰色微立方体结壳，多数不足一毫米，如粉尘般覆盖在更早期、色泽更淡的一代萤石那些宽阔的阶梯状晶面上。 结壳较薄之处，底下的晶体以烟熏紫水晶般的色调透出；而在棱脊上结壳加厚的地方，紫色深沉得近乎全黑。 一侧还有几处乳白色斑块打断了这层包覆。
一件标本上并存着两代晶体：大块状的立方体最先形成，在冷却的富氟溶液中缓慢生长；细密的结壳则来得更晚也更快，同时在每一个可用的晶面上成核。 从头到尾成分都是 CaF2——只有晶体的大小记录下晶洞的环境转变得多么剧烈。 莫氏硬度 4、四个方向完全解理，而微晶结壳是其中最脆弱的部分：除尘请用软毛刷，绝不要用布。
