这类细粒黄铁矿晶簇形成得晚，是在冷却中的含硫化物流体漫过已经结晶完成的碳酸盐时发生的——这也正是黄铁矿如此忠实地复制了白云石表面的原因。 黄铁矿的化学式为 FeS2，莫氏硬度 6 至 6.5，硬，但化学性质不安分：请存放于干燥处，并远离潮湿的棉花，因为湿气正是硫化物劣化的起点。
