黄铜色的黄铁矿几乎填满了这件秘鲁标本的整个观赏面——方块状的立方体与五角十二面体，最大的一颗超过一厘米，晶面上刻划着细密的平行条纹，随着标本在手中转动，色泽在金色与青铜色之间游移。 无色的石英晶尖楔入其间的空隙，一枚透明的晶片越过上缘挺出，右下方则露出稻草黄色的母岩。
那些条纹正是黄铁矿的招牌。 二硫化铁（FeS2）在此生长时，立方体与五角十二面体以细密交替的阶梯彼此竞争，留下一种刻线般的表面；当纹路从一个晶面跨到相邻晶面时，方向会呈直角转折。 谈到如此锐利、如此明亮的黄铁矿，秘鲁是多数收藏者最先想到的产地。 请保持标本干燥；湿气是唯一能让新鲜硫化物失去光泽的东西。
