一枚石英晶体，孤立而直挺地站在一块赭黄色黏土板上，独自撑起这件兰汶标本的全部看点。 晶端明亮、晶面锐利，透光之处清澈如玻璃；再往下，柱身逐渐转暗，内部充满深色的包裹体云雾与锈色薄膜，而晶体当年长入矿脉裂隙之处，至今仍沾附着同一种黄色黏土的粉末。
石英属三方晶系，莫氏硬度 7，坚韧到足以在周遭一切崩解之后依然完好——这正是为什么在像这样充填黏土的晶洞里，晶体能完整取出，而母岩早已碎成泥浆。 晶体内部的深色薄纱是生长过程中被卷入的矿物质，记录了当时流体中悬浮着什么。 这件标本脆弱的一半是松软的母岩：请保持干燥，切勿刷洗。
