细长的石英晶尖自一道低矮的白色脊部升起，离开母岩处无色，接近晶尖则转为柔和的淡紫，晶体内部还悬着一道更深的紫色条带，像被封进玻璃里的阴影。 其下一层较扁平、较霜白的晶体向左延展，并逐渐变薄成淡色的晶簇薄壳，覆在锈褐色的岩石上。
石英是 SiO2，属三方晶系，莫氏硬度 7——硬得可以毫无顾虑地拿取，而收藏架上多数东西并非如此。 色调偏在晶尖一端，正是颜色在晶体生长后期才被开启的惯常印记。 与所有紫色石英一样，多年的强烈日照会让它褪色，因此陈列时请远离直射日光。 奇瓦瓦州的奈卡矿更为人知的是规模惊人的石膏；像这样的标本，则来自它远为朴素的晶洞。
