一道锈褐色的阴影悬在这颗单体块状方解石晶体的深处，各面均具玻璃光泽，透光时呈淡玫瑰色：那是细微赤铁矿粉尘构成的幻影，标记着生长曾经暂停、晶体聚集了铁质，而后又被清澈的方解石封住。 较重的红褐色铁染沿底部延伸，晶体在该处与一块白色母岩相接。
方解石的这抹红晕，来自其中包裹的赤铁矿 Fe2O3色素沿平面分布而非遍布整颗晶体，因此转动时从一个角度看是粉红色，换一个角度却近乎无色。 方解石为 CaCO3，硬度 3，具完全的菱面体解理——这代表摔落时它会沿平整面裂开，而不只是缺一小角。 请让它远离醋、家用清洁剂及任何其他酸性物质。
