这件湖南萤石几乎全靠一颗宽阔的晶体撑起场面。 正面是一整片平坦的晶面，宽约两指，呈霜面而非镜面般明亮，只有沿着右侧边缘，生长才碎成一道由较小平行立方体组成的阶梯。 颜色极淡——冰白色，边缘泛出最浅的一点绿，石体深处则嵌着一层柔和的蓝灰色幻影。
那片淡蓝色的内部就是幻影——本晶体当初包覆生长的那颗更早、更小的晶体，因为两个生长阶段的颜色略有差异而至今可见。 这类近乎无色的材料很值得背光欣赏：在后方放一盏灯，幻影便会浮现出来。 萤石硬度莫氏 4，沿八面体方向解理干净俐落，所以它不喜欢在抽屉里被推来推去。
