菱面体如屋瓦般堆叠：这件郴州小型标本以一片片交叠的晶板向上构筑，每一层都比前一层错开一些，最后让整组晶体长成一座小小的阶梯状塔楼。 最上方数层带着铜红色的外皮，泛出淡淡的缎面光泽；其下同样的晶形延续为奶白与淡玫瑰色，凡是风化不曾触及的晶面，受光时都像玻璃一样明亮。
这样的阶梯状生长记录着中断。 每一次供给的停顿都留下一道平台，平台再叠成梯田——这里没有任何切割或修整，形态完全是天然长成。 方解石的化学式为 CaCO3，莫氏硬度仅 3，并沿三个方向完全解理：指甲即可划伤，一滴醋就能蚀出痕迹，因此请以软毛刷除尘，并让任何酸性物质远离。
尺寸 2.8 × 2.0 × 2.5 cm、重 15 g，是名副其实的小型标本，以黏土固定在拍摄所用的透明压克力底座上，底座随标本一同寄出。 此处每一张照片拍的都是这一组晶体。
