Chivor, in the eastern emerald belt of Colombia, is one of the country's two great emerald districts, producing fine emerald in black shale and calcite veins.
Colombian emerald
Colombia is the world's premier source of fine emerald, and Chivor — high in the eastern Andes — is one of its historic mining centres. The emerald grew in veins cutting black, carbon-rich shale.
Signature minerals
Chivor is known for gem emerald (the green, chromium-bearing variety of beryl), often with pyrite, calcite and albite. Sharp emerald crystals on matrix are the prize.
