在一臂之外看，彷彿有人在岩石上罩了一層抽成細絲的金屬。走近，那片薄霧便化為數千枚輝鉍礦針晶——銀亮、細如髮絲，有些長逾一公分——交織纏繞地覆在深灰近黑的母岩上。無色的石英小晶體自這層絨氈中頂出，結成玻璃般的小結；下緣針晶覆蓋轉薄之處，露出淡色的碳酸鹽薄殼。
輝鉍礦是硫化鉍 Bi2S3，屬斜方晶系，莫氏硬度 2，比指甲還軟。在這種針狀形態下，這份柔軟對收藏者而言就是全部關鍵：毛刷、指尖或一次隨手的包裝，都會讓針晶彎折或斷裂，而且不會再長回來。請置於防塵罩下或密閉展示櫃中，移動時只碰母岩，並且永遠不要為它除塵。
