關於此標本
一枚細長的祖母綠柱晶斜貫這塊小岩塊的正面，淡薄荷綠襯著白色粗晶質母岩，母岩看上去像壓實的積雪。晶體是一根長約兩公分的扁柱，顏色以中段最濃，往兩端逐漸變淡；靠近上緣另有一枚較短的綠色刃晶破面而出，底部則見深色雲母質斑點。
祖母綠是綠柱石中由鉻或釩致色的變種，成分為 Be3Al2Si6O18，並正是以這種方式長成六方柱晶——鎖在圍岩之中，而非在晶洞裡獨立挺立。留在母岩裡的晶體比一顆散晶告訴你更多：你能讀出它如何被供給，以及周圍長出了什麼。硬度 7.5 至 8 讓柱晶本身相當堅韌；脆弱的部分是周圍的母岩。
