關於此標本
扁平、掌心大小的螢石板，表面是一層細緻的結晶殼，從邊緣的乳白色，經極淡的粉紅，過渡到中心清澈的薄荷綠色水潭，那裡薄得足以透光。深色的金屬顆粒坐落在這片表面上——磁鐵礦，晶面粗糙、近乎全黑，其中四粒相當可觀，最大的足有一公分寬——像墨滴落在磨砂玻璃上。
綠色區域值得慢慢細看。螢石的顏色來自晶格中的微量元素與缺陷，同一塊板可以在幾公分之內隨著流體化學條件的改變而變換色調；此處顏色集中於中央，向外漸淡。磁鐵礦（Fe3O4）是所有常見礦物中磁性最強的一種——一塊小磁鐵就能把那些顆粒從周圍的螢石中吸出來。
