一束束短柱狀方解石晶體自深色鐵染母岩中迸出，聚成蓮座般的花簇，每一束都在頂端綻開如一朵盛放的花。顏色並非金黃，而是淡雅的青瓷色——鼠尾草奶白，蠟質而半透明，晶體之間的縫隙裡積著赭色粉塵。正面看去，標本像一畦低矮的花叢；側面看去，則是一片向外傾斜的鈍頭柱林。
方解石（CaCO3）屬三方晶系，莫氏硬度 3，以完全的菱面體解理與遇稀酸即起泡著稱——這正是這樣一件標本絕不可接觸食醋、清潔噴劑，或撞上層板邊緣的原因。放射狀的晶習源於在同一基座上反覆成核，每一枚新晶體都較鄰晶偏斜幾度，直到整束開展如扇。
標本高 10.2 cm，寬 10.2 cm，厚 5.1 cm，重 465 g，無需底座即可端正立於自身母岩之上。照片拍攝自此處出售的這件標本，而非同批貨品的樣品。
