這座塔柱一半是玻璃，一半是碎石，而這份對比正是它的全部要旨。拋光的正面呈煙燻琥珀灰而半透明，向上收成四稜的尖端；左側則保持它從地下取出時的模樣：一層鼠尾草綠的結殼，佈滿孔洞，並在鐵質浸染之處拉出鏽橙色的條紋。
方解石（CaCO3）莫氏硬度 3，沿三個方向完全解理，因此要從中琢磨出一座 15 cm 的方尖柱，是一件需要耐性的工作——手勁一重，料子就會沿菱面解理裂開，而不是接受拋光。對著燈光看，柱體透出溫暖的褐色，內部的紗狀薄膜與生長面隨之浮現，未經處理的結殼則維持全然不透光。
高 15.2 cm，底面 8.1 × 3.3 cm，重 710 g，靠自身的鋸切底面獨立站穩，無須額外底座。本頁每一張照片拍的都是這一座塔柱。
