這件作品的一半是一張臉，另一半則是它所出自的洞腔。正面被雕成了骷髏——深陷的眼窩、鏤空的鼻腔、方正成排的牙齒——用的是灰色的糖粒狀石英，其間有赭色的脈紋與斑塊。顴骨之後，琢磨者停了手，晶洞壁保持著生成時的模樣：奶油色與棕褐色的晶體疙瘩，其間夾著無色的石英晶尖，那片粗糙的區域看上去就像剪短的頭髮。
這樣加工一件晶洞，機會只有一次：切磨者必須在下第一刀之前就猜出洞壁的走向，然後把面部推進到足以撐起表情、卻又不至於破入中空的深度。石英莫氏硬度 7，很能承載細節，但晶簇區是脆弱的那一半——晶尖用指甲就能折斷，因此請握持骷髏堅實的正面。
這顆骷髏立起來是 11.9 × 7.1 × 9.1 cm，重 1247 g，略多於 1.2 kg。在深色反光平面上拍攝，未使用底座；圖中的這件骷髏，就是將被裝箱寄出的那一件。
